Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
